BRITISH CYCLING ARTICLE ON TRAINING & CLIPS

Luke Webber joined the riders and Jeremy Hayes to sample the weekends camp and discover the direction on British Cycling BMX development at its entry-level.

"BMX is going back to basics." That was the resounding message delivered by British Cycling's Talent Team coach Jeremy Hayes following weeks of assessment, before selecting riders he believes to be Britain's best BMX prospects for the 2016 Olympics.

And although setting cones out in the Velodrome car park for an afternoon skill session may seem far detached from the biggest stage in small wheeled racing, there was a bigger shock in store. The latest intake of riders would immediately be required to remove their SPD pedals in exchange for flats and a series of no-frills drills designed to test the foundation of the skills required to make an Olympic-standard athlete.

Hayes' conviction of a focussed plan toward this goal - a plan which holds the perfection of basic, repeatable skills in the same regard as BMX tracks, heavy weights and road sprinting schedules - was obvious and was reflected as a wheelie, manual and slalom competition had been set, all strictly in line with an impression that had been formed on the current condition of BMX racing in the UK - something which confuses the man who must re-shape the base of the talent pool.

"The message I am trying to get out there is a hard one to put across - I think that the current crop of young riders are too influenced by the fashionable BMX training methods; the sprint drills and gym work, the training that makes you big and strong at 18. Unfortunately that isn't enough to win big races."

Instead, Hayes insists that the establishment of good technique both on the bike and in the gym are the biggest barriers to success and speaking candidly, reveals there is one piece of kit which is stunting the development of more top British BMX riders; SPD pedals.

"The biggest thing that has hindered skill development are clips - so much so that I'd like to see the French system adopted where until you are over 16 you can't go onto clips. We don't think of them as being essential things; more the cherry on the cake. What's important is that riders learn technique through playing on the bike and that's something which clips discourage. You can see that legacy is now creeping into racing; I can name riders who have raced internationally who would benefit from taking the clips off their bikes and going back to basics. That's because they are missing the fundamentals learned on flat pedals and that's the focus of the Talent Team; developing rider skills.

"Our talent team have to go out practising manuals, wheelies, slalom; I'm going to start running backhop comps and 360 comps - the things we would do as kids on our bikes but that seem to be forgotten with the advent of race bikes with carbon forks, clips and parents being protective over expensive kit. Our development is totally converse to that - it can be done on any BMX, in any weather and without access to a specialist facility."

As the cones are measured into place it becomes alarming at how basic the facilities can be. For the manual assessment riders use their bottles to mark progress on a fifty-metre strip which is usually home to lorry drivers on overnight breaks. The same setup is used for wheelies and timed sprints, before a small re-design creates a slalom far tougher than any desolate, boulevard-wide BMX track.

Perhaps most disappointingly however, was the way these sessions were devised; Hayes finding that even before riding the track, applicants for last years Talent Team didn't posses skills which in the past have been seen as the most basic.
"This year to get onto the Team the bar is higher and our development of basic skills is the reason for that. This year we've had underage riders challenging in the Junior category - it has been the most measurable result of success and something down to our mantra: repeatable performance of predetermined skills. And not only on the track. They might be able to manual between a set of doubles, but can they do it every time and is it repeatable?"

With times and distances recorded from today's session, the next gathering of the Talent Team and a comparison of results six weeks on will answer that question. But as the sun sets there's still time for three more hours of training - albeit from relative discord of competition in the carpark to the discipline and quiet of the gym.

Jeremy's Top Five Tips:
1. Watch the best BMX riders and compare them against video of yourself. If you were a young footballer you'd be studying the Premiership - BMX is no different and video is one of our biggest tools of review.
2. Use flat pedals. Making the core skills look easy is a way to impress on selection camps.
3. Know what you want to achieve - we look for those who have ambitions in line with our own.
4. Use the gym as a tool for your success, but never forget you're a bike rider first.
5. Remember that you don't always need a BMX track to become a better BMX rider

BRITISH BMX CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009

23 CGR riders were part of a strong North Region team at the 2009 BMX British Championships held at Broadway House Park, Cheddar on 20th September.
With over 700 entries the event was a massive experience for the CGR team, many who were riding their first Brits.

The weather was perfect for Sunday’s racing and our riders did themselves proud both with their attitudes and performances:
6 & Under Boys: Morgan Chidley easily qualified to the knockout stages in a group of 37 riders, he cruised through both his quarters and semis to book a place in the final. He lead the final down the first straight before losing the lead, not defeated Morgan pushed the eventual British Champion all the way to the line to finish 2nd in his first season of racing.
8 Boys: Morgan’s brother, Mason Chidley, another rider competing in his first season had a tremendous day in this very competitive 33 rider class. Like his brother, Mason cruised through his qualifiers, quarters and semis to line up for the final against riders who have a couple of years experience over him. Mason rode a fantastic lap to come home in 4th position.
10 Boys: Charlie Walker surprised everyone with some excellent qualifying results to book his place in the quarters. A tough draw meant Charlie had to work hard to get his place in the next round which he duly did. The semi was a race to far and Charlie went out at this stage finishing 15th overall out of 36 riders.
11 Boys: only 31 riders in this class meant straight to semis with no quarters. Chris Worrall and Jack Critchlow both rode well and qualified through with ease. Drawn together in the semis against some of the best in the country proved too much with them both finishing the day 10th and 11th respectively.
12 Boys: Ashley Walker rode well and was unlucky not to make the knockout stages finishing 21st overall out of 30 riders.
13 Boys: five CGR riders in this group of 28. All riding well with Dan Billington having only been riding since the start of the season but keen to progress. Aaron Brown was on fire in his qualifiers but unfortunately got a bad start in his semi that he wasn’t able to recover from so went out at this stage along with Jordan Taylor, George Hammond and Alex Guest.
14 Boys: Shane Dean, riding on the regional number 1 plate, was doing well in his qualifiers making it through to the knockout stages where he went out in the semis finishing 14th out of 36 riders.
Junior Male: this is where the racing gets tough and exciting – 24 riders all with something to prove makes this class one of the best. Four CGR riders saw Kyle Evans come out on top with 3rd place. Levi Ashley had an unlucky day going out in the semis after a first turn disaster, Adam Guest also went out in the semis and Dean O’Neill going out in the knockout stages.
Male 19+: another exciting and close class of 26 riders. CGR were pinning their hopes on Stay Strong World Champion Marco Dell’Isola to take the win but it wasn’t to be as Marco came home in 3rd place, Shaun Issitt also made the final coming home in 7th.
Female 8-9: Melissa Guest was unlucky not to make the final and finished in a good 11th overall.
Female 10-12: Josie McFall riding her first season had a great experience at the Brits and was unfortunate to go out during qualifying.
Female 13-15: 21 riders in this class with Emma Myers making the semi finals in her first season. 15th overall was the final result for Emma.
Cruiser 12 & Under: Chris Worrall lined up for this one on his second bike and was looking good for a place in the final until a poor start in his last qualifier put him down the pack and he was unable to recover to go through leaving him 9th overall.
Cruiser 30-39: Alistair Burton was our lone entry in a class of 41 “older and crazier” riders. With four riders tied on points at the end of the qualifiers Alistair went into the run off which he won by some distance to book a place in the quarters. A good start saw him keeping out of the way of a first straight crash before avoiding carnage in the first turn to surprise himself with a trip into the semis. One race too far as Alistair went for an early shower finishing the day in a very respectable 16th place.
Old Skool: a new category for this years Brits was the Old Skool category for original BMX bikes from the 80s/90s. Some of the loft relics were dusted down and Phil Critchlow brought his classic home in 16th place.
The Club were placed 18th out of 50 and did their bit to help the North Region take the Regional title.

BC BMX NATIONAL SERIES ROUNDS 9 & 10

Fourteen CGR riders were in attendance at the final rounds of the BC BMX National Series in Bournemouth over the August Bank Holiday weekend. A weekend that would also see the Alex in action at Bournemouth – who would uphold the honour of Cheshire?
With riders looking to consolidate their ranking positions the weekend was set for some fantastic racing.

Saturday was warm & sunny with the following results recorded:
Male 6 & Under: Morgan Chidley eventually finished 8th in the A final after a fall while in 2nd place.
Male 8: Mason Chidley made the A final but unfortunately crashed out.
Male 11/12: Chris Worrall made quarters but in a strong age group of 35 riders didn’t progress any further.
Male 13/14: Three CGR riders in this age group with Shane Dean coming out as our top rider with a 3rd place in the B final. Alex Guest, Aaron Brown & George Hammond were all eliminated at the moto stage.
Junior Male: A massively competitive category saw Kyle Evans crash heavily in his B final & Levi Ashley make 8th in the A final. Adam Guest had a 3rd place finish after riding consistently all day.
Male 19+: Shaun Issitt had a semi final photofinish that went against him to put him into the B final where he had a comfortable win.
Female 8-9: Melissa Guest had a good ride to finish the day with a 7th place in the A final.
Female 13-15: Emma Myers was attending her first BMX National event & rode well with a B final 3rd.
12 & Under Cruiser: Chris Worrall had an A final 5th to complete a good days riding in two categories.

Sunday was gloomy, windy & overcast, some of our riders had a similar day!!
Male 6 & Under: Morgan Chidley had a disappointing day for the wrong reasons. Having ridden well through his motos an incident occurred with his brother that culminated in him missing his semi final. The organisers ran to the rulebook which meant that Morgan progressed no further.
Male 8: Mason Chidley’s day was going well with moto wins until a horrendous crash in his 3rd moto left him unconscious & had him sent off to hospital. Overall a bad day for the Chidleys, these two are ones to watch next year.
Male 11/12: Another quarter final exit for Chris Worrall, better moto results than the Saturday though.
Male 13/14: Shane Dean finished 7th in the B final having struggled with a wrist injury for some of the day. Aaron Brown, Alex Guest & George Hammond again were eliminated at the moto stages.
Junior Male: A better day for Kyle Evans saw a fantastic A final 2nd place, with team mate Levi Ashley in 7th. Adam Guest duplicated Saturday with a B final 3rd.
Male 19+: World Champion Marco Dell’Isola had a nasty crash during the motos but recovered to take 3rd place in the A final. Shaun Issitt put the semi final issues to bed to make the A final, eventually coming home in 6th place.
Female 8-9: Melissa Guest had an A final 8th to finish off a good weekend.
Female 13-15: Emma Myers rode well again & seemed to be enjoying the experience. A good B final 3rd rounded off a good weekend.
12 & Under Cruiser: Chris Worrall had moto wins today & finished in a good 5th place in the A final.

The following CGR riders have completed the required rounds to gain a National ranking:
Morgan Childey – 5th – Male 6 & Under
Mason Chidley – 9th – Male 8
Chris Worrall – 29th – Male 11/12
Shane Dean – 12th – Male 13/14
Alex Guest – 15th – Male 13/14
Jordan Taylor-Griffith – 27th – Male 13/14
Aaron Brown – 29th – Male 13/14
Kyle Evans – 3rd – Junior Male
Levi Ashley – 6th – Junior Male
Adam Guest – 13th – Junior Male
Ash Davey – 14th – Junior Male
Shaun Issitt – 13th – Male 19+
Melissa Guest – 6th – Female 8/9
Chris Worrall – 4th – 12 & Under Cruiser

The future looks good for CGR with a lot of the ranked riders currently either in only their first or second years of racing. Out of the fourteen ranked riders there are six riders currently ranked in the top 10 in the country.

Beginner & low intermediate sessions for new riders are being run by the “GhostRiders Academy”. These are being held at the Shanaze Reade BMX Track, Tipkinder Park. These sessions will be held on a Sunday morning from 09:30am-10:30am & will run in 5 week blocks starting on Sunday 4th October. Riders will be accepted from ages 3+ as long as they can comfortably ride a bike. At the end of the sessions riders should be comfortable to move into the Club environment. More information & registration forms can be obtained by emailing: bmxacademy@live.co.uk

REMEMBER THIS IS YOUR CLUB

A massive thank you to everyone who helped out at the weekend with the event. Those who were on site early both days, those who did the on event duties, those who stayed behind to clear up and those who made all our visitors feel welcome. It was appreciated by all and your help has been noted.

To enable future events to happen this sort of commitment goes a long way to securing this.

On a slightly less positive note there were issues raised by the local police with car parking on Victoria Avenue which I hope non of our members were guilty of, as this may have a negative effect on whether we are allowed to hold future events.

The Future
Regular work parties will start soon to keep the track in top condition and to also keep the site tidy. All members will be expected to be involved in some capacity - the quicker it gets done the quicker the riders get back on track.

Thanks again for a positive show of strength at the weekend.

TUESDAY COACHING SESSIONS

There seems to be some confusion about Tuesday night coaching sessions.
So that everyone is aware the following three rules will be enforced from now on:

1) Sessions start at 6pm. If you are late you will not be allowed to join the session as it disrupts the other riders - you will be asked to wait until 7pm before riding the track.

2) No clip pedals are allowed during Club coaching sessions. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

3) Gloves, long sleeves, long pants & a full face helmet are required.

In the event of sessions being cancelled these will be posted on here before 5pm on the day of the session.

BC BMX NATIONAL SERIES RANKINGS AFTER ROUND 6

The BC BMX National Series Rounds 5 & 6 were held over the wet weekend of 6th/7th June which saw our riders back in action on home turf at Peterborough BMX Track.
Things weren't looking good heading into the event: a trip to the Met Office website predicted doom and gloom and good sprinkling of rain threatening to make it more Peter-bog-horror.
